An Unexpected Solution for Tooth Decay

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London are developing an innovative dental treatment to protect teeth from decay and acid erosion. Utilizing flake glass technology—typically used to shield tanks, pipes, and steel bridges from corrosion—the researchers created Varnish VLC. Just like how metal structures rust when in contact with water, teeth corrode when exposed to acids. Varnish VLC not only mimics the natural appearance of enamel but also has outperformed traditional methods in, “both wear resistance and protection against acid erosion.” Scientists hope it will offer a minimally invasive, effective solution for those prone to tooth decay.

How Dentophobia May be Harmful for Oral Health

A new survey reveals that roughly 57% of patients lie to their dentists about their oral hygiene habits. Fear of the dentist, combined with a desire to impress them, often leads to anxiety and embarrassment around telling the truth about how often they brush and floss. Additionally, of the 2,000 people surveyed, 45% admitted they had not seen a dentist in the past year, contributing to the statistic that 1 in 5 Americans have not gone to the dentist in 5 years. For dental professionals, fostering empathy and creating a safe, judgment-free environment is essential to building trust with patients.
