How Taiwan’s AI is Transforming Diagnostics

A research team in Taiwan is developing an AI-powered diagnostic model called YOLO (You Only Look Once) to analyze dental X-rays for signs of odontogenic sinusitis. Many people who have this condition struggle to identify the core issue behind their symptoms, and diagnosing these patients can be drawn out, sometimes needing multiple CT scans and communication between dentists and otolaryngologists. The YOLO model can currently “detect key anatomical relationships—such as the proximity of tooth roots to the sinuses”—with 98.2% accuracy. This cost-effective tool could be the key to early detection, enabling faster diagnosis and treatment before the condition progresses.

Utah Leading the Reform Against Fluoride

Utah has become the first state in the U.S. to ban fluoride in public drinking water, citing concerns over its effectiveness and potential health risks. The decision follows growing skepticism, fueled by a recent study suggesting fluoride consumption may lower children's IQ. Governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, stated that the “benefits of water fluoridation have been insubstantial in Utah”, despite nationwide research showing its role in reducing cavities and improving oral health. While the ban is currently limited to Utah, national debates over fluoride continue, emphasizing the importance of patient education and awareness.
