Dental Emergencies: Recent Increase in Incidence Points to Challenges in Care for Vulnerable Populations

Sikka Software collects opt-in data from thousands of dental practices across the nation and monitors for emerging trends in dentistry. We have identified a concerning pattern in dentistry: a drastic increase in emergency dental visits. From 2008 to 2012, the number of emergency visits increased at a steady rate. However, in 2013 and 2014, the rate of increase more than doubled each year for the busiest emergency days. This rise in emergency visits occurred despite an overall increase in patients receiving regular preventative dental care.
To uncover potential drivers of increased incidence of dental emergencies, we will examine the causes of these emergencies, specifically delayed or nonexistent preventive care and early interventions and an increase in those vulnerable to these causes
